Brazilian "soap-operas," or telenovelas, are broadcast throughout Brazil six days a week during prime-time. Every day, they attract an audience of more than forty million viewers. They also attract millions of dollars of advertising revenue and promote a range of commodities and desires that are made available for you, the television viewer. The connection between telenovelas, commodities, and desires is the telenovela flow. This book is a study of how the telenovela flow shapes, reinforces or challenges the hierarchies of race, gender, sexuality and class that exist in contemporary Brazil.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Soziologie - Familie, Frauen, Männer, Sexualität, Geschlechter, Note: 1,3, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Institut für Soziologie), 95 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit soll das Frauen- und Männerbild in der deutschen Telenovela Verliebt in Berlin herausgearbeitet werden. Das soziologische Interesse besteht in der nicht zu vernachlässigenden gesellschaftlichen Funktion der Darstellung von Frauen- und Männerbildern in deutschen Familienserien. Gerade sie setzen einen Orientierungsrahmen, bieten geschlechtsspezifische Leitbilder und haben eine enorme Wirkung im Hinblick auf die Verbreitung und Tradierung gesellschaftlich geprägter Vorstellungen (vgl. Machenbach 2000, S.46). Das Fernsehen ist als Sozialisationsinstanz in der Lage, Vorstellungen über verschiedene Bevölkerungs- und Altersgruppen, über das Frau- und Mann-Sein zu vermitteln (vgl. ebd., S.208 Die Arbeit ist in den Kontext der sozialwissenschaftlichen Geschlechterforschung einzuordnen. Diese fordert in Verbindung mit der Frauenbewegung die Gleichbehandlung und Gleichberechtigung von Frauen und Männern. Hinterfragt werden soll, ob das Frauen-Genre Telenovela hinsichtlich des Geschlechts, alte Rollenbilder und Stereotype aufweist. Die inhaltsanalytische Betrachtung der Telenovela-Charaktere zeigt, dass Frauenfiguren in dieser Telenovela einen niedrigeren Berufsstatus haben als Männer. Die männlichen Figuren tragen in ihren Positionen mehr Verantwortung und geben häufiger Anweisungen, während die weiblichen Figuren die Anweisungen erhalten und sich an bestehenden Regeln orientieren müssen. Sie sind im Schnitt jünger als die männlichen Figuren und auch in Partnerschaften sind sie stets der jüngere Part. Ugly Betty has become one of the most globally popular telenovelas. The Ugly Betty storyline is taken from the Cinderella plot structure and retold in a modern way. This research demonstrates that the Cinderella plot is still identified by adults and is continually reborn through mass media. As the story of Cinderella is continuously retold some elements in the story are changed. This work examines six characters from the 1950's Walt Disney's Cinderella and will compare them to the American version of Ugly Betty to identify the retelling of Cinderella. The overall theme of Cinderella changes with the more modern telling of Ugly Betty. This paper found that in Ugly Betty, the gender roles of the two main characters were reversed. In the Cinderella movie, the prince saves Cinderella. In Ugly Betty, the character of Betty saves the leading man. Read more...

Semiótica do Crime - A Semiótica da Narrativa na Telenovela Review
O livro Semiótica do crime: a semiótica da narrativa na telenovela, explica o percurso gerativo de sentido na narrativa televisiva quando, diante de um assassinato, a trama apresenta duas personagens principais suspeitas e estimula, pois, o público a posicionar-se sobre quem está falando a verdade. Analisa o processo de significação resultante das personagens Flora e Donatela na telenovela A Favorita, de João Emanuel Carneiro. O telespectador ao assistir à telenovela é guiado pelas características das duas personagens e as ações destas provocam um efeito de sentido nele. A obra traz como fundamentação teórica aspectos sobre a história da telenovela, características deste gênero, destaca os conceitos e aplicações da semiótica da narrativa, evidenciado por Greimas e outros autores e contextualiza o percurso gerativo de sentido nas narrativas. Enfim, investiga a forma com que a narrativa de suspense direciona o telespectador à escolha do assassino por meio dos indícios pontuados pelas personagens. Estos siete relatos, y un comic ilustrado por Ricardo Camacho, fueron escritos hace mucho, sin demasiadas lecturas y fuera del ámbito literario, lo que los hizo disfrutables y les otorgó un aura de libertad y cinismo. Presentan similitudes (producto de las mismas obsesiones) pero también diferentes estilos y abordajes. Son historias que nacieron en una época cuya vida cotidiana se veía dominada por la omnipresencia de las telenovelas (y por su equivalente en el ámbito musical, la balada). Si bien las telenovelas no reflejaban en lo absoluto nuestra realidad, la realidad comenzaba a parecerse peligrosamente a las telenovelas.
